What makes a Mumbai portfolio different
The Mumbai Metropolitan Region holds roughly 2.25 to 2.77 crore people and most of India's financial services industry. It also produces a very particular balance sheet: a home that represents 60–80% of net worth, a salary that looks large until rent and school fees are deducted, and equity compensation that arrives in unpredictable lumps.
That combination creates three problems that a generic "start a SIP" answer does not solve.
1. Property concentration
A ₹3 crore flat in Andheri or Powai is not a diversified asset — it is one illiquid, undiversified, single-location bet financed with leverage. For many Mumbai households it is the entire portfolio. The planning question is not "should I buy more property" but "how much financial capital do I need outside this flat so that I am not forced to sell it at the wrong time".
2. Equity compensation
ESOPs and RSUs concentrate risk twice: your salary and your savings depend on the same company, and often the same sector. The right structure usually involves staggered vesting-period sales, a tax-aware holding decision (perquisite tax at vest versus capital gains at sale), and redeployment into diversified mutual funds rather than into more of the same stock.
3. Income that looks bigger than the surplus
A ₹50 lakh package in Mumbai can produce a smaller investable surplus than a ₹25 lakh package in a smaller city. We start from the actual cash flow, not the CTC, and size the SIP from what genuinely remains after rent, EMIs, school fees and parents' support.
How we work with clients across Mumbai
Manas Money is based at Wagle Estate, Thane West — about 45–60 minutes from most of Mumbai outside peak hours. In practice, clients choose one of three formats:
- Google Meet for quarterly reviews, with a shared screen and live portfolio walkthrough. This is the default for most Mumbai clients.
- In-person at the Thane office for the first meeting and any major restructuring, when documents need to be signed and discussed.
- In-person in Mumbai for clients with larger portfolios, scheduled in batches a few times a year.
The review cadence is the same regardless of format: quarterly, plus ad-hoc reviews after a job change, a property purchase, an inheritance or a market drawdown of more than 15%.
The planning framework we use
The firm is run by CA Manas Madrecha — a Chartered Accountant, AMFI Registered Mutual Fund Distributor (ARN-330576) and NISM Certified Research Analyst. Being a CA matters more in Mumbai than in most cities, because the tax layer and the investment layer are unusually entangled here.
- Cash flow and protection. Emergency fund sized to Mumbai costs, term insurance sized to liabilities, health cover sized to a metro hospital bill.
- Goal mapping. Each goal gets a date and an amount, and therefore a required return and a maximum acceptable drawdown. A three-year goal cannot hold a small-cap fund regardless of its five-year record.
- Asset allocation. Equity, debt and alternatives split by goal, not by conviction. This is where most Mumbai portfolios are wrong — heavily equity in the short-term bucket, and heavily debt in the long-term bucket.
- Product selection. Mutual funds, SIF, PMS, AIF and corporate FDs, chosen on cost and mandate fit, not on recent returns.
- Review and rebalance. Quarterly checks, annual rebalancing, and tax-aware switching so that restructuring does not hand back the gains it was meant to protect. Our mutual fund taxation guide covers the LTCG and STCG mechanics.
Services Mumbai clients use most
- Financial planning — the full plan, usually refreshed annually.
- Portfolio review and rebalancing — for the 12-fund, four-advisor portfolio that accumulated over a decade.
- NRI services — for Mumbai families where one spouse or one child is now overseas.
- Tax planning — capital gains sequencing, ESOP taxation, and the interaction with the new Income-tax Act, 2025 provisions effective 1 April 2026.
Fees
As an AMFI-registered mutual fund distributor, we are paid a trail commission by the asset management company, inside the regular plan's expense ratio — typically 0.20%–1.00% a year on equity funds. There is no separate advisory invoice.
The alternative model is a SEBI-registered fee-only adviser, who charges directly and is capped at 2.5% of assets under advice per year, or ₹1,51,000 per family per year in fixed-fee mode. There were 1,062 SEBI-registered investment advisers in India as of 25 October 2026. Both models are legitimate; they price different things. We have set out the trade-off honestly in fee-only RIA vs mutual fund distributor.
The two numbers Mumbai clients get wrong
Before any investment discussion, two numbers need to be right.
The emergency fund. The standard advice is three to six months of expenses. In Mumbai, with rent, school fees and a commute that can absorb a month's surplus, six months is the floor and nine is safer for a single-income household. This money belongs in a sweep FD or a liquid fund, not in equity.
The health cover. A metro hospital bill for a cardiac procedure or an oncology course can exceed a decade of premium payments. Employer cover is a benefit, not a plan — it ends when the job ends. A family floater sized to actual Mumbai treatment costs, plus a top-up, is usually cheaper than the sum insured gap suggests.
Both of these reduce the investable surplus, which is exactly why they are skipped. They are also the reason portfolios get liquidated at the worst possible moment.
If you are comparing advisors in Mumbai
Mumbai has more advisors per square kilometre than any city in India, and most of them are competent. The filter that actually matters is not the fund performance they quote — it is whether they can explain, in one sentence, how they get paid and what happens to that payment if your portfolio falls 30%. Read how to evaluate a financial advisor for the full checklist, then book a free consultation.

Frequently asked questions
Do you have an office in Mumbai?
No. The office is in Wagle Estate, Thane West, which is within the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. Mumbai clients meet on Google Meet for reviews and in person either at the Thane office or in Mumbai by prior arrangement.
Mumbai mein financial advisor ki fees kitni hoti hai?
Manas Money ek AMFI-registered mutual fund distributor hai, isliye alag advisory fee nahi hai — trail commission AMC deta hai, jo regular plan ke expense ratio ke andar hoti hai (equity funds mein aam taur par 0.20%–1.00% saalana). Fee-only SEBI RIA alag se charge karte hain, SEBI cap ke andar.
Can you help with ESOP and RSU planning?
Yes. Equity compensation needs a vesting-to-sale plan, a decision on perquisite tax versus capital gains, and redeployment into diversified funds. This is one of the most common planning issues for Mumbai clients in technology, banking and consulting roles.
Is my property counted in the financial plan?
Yes, but as a concentrated, illiquid holding rather than as a diversified asset. The plan works out how much financial capital you need outside the property so that you are never forced to sell it at a bad time.
Do you manage NRI portfolios for Mumbai families?
Yes. Where a spouse or child has moved overseas, we handle the India-side portfolio, NRE/NRO structuring and repatriation questions. See the NRI financial planning guide for the FEMA mechanics.
