What a mutual fund distributor in Thane actually does
A mutual fund distributor is the person between you and the asset management company. The AMC builds the fund; the distributor helps you decide which funds belong in your portfolio, executes the paperwork, and stays involved after the money is invested. In India that role is licensed by AMFI (Association of Mutual Funds in India), which issues an ARN — Manas Money's is ARN-330576.
The work that matters happens after the first purchase. A distributor registered in Thane with a relationship-based practice does four things: matches each fund to a specific goal and time horizon, checks that the overall portfolio is not holding six versions of the same strategy, rebalances when allocations drift, and talks you out of selling during a drawdown. The last one is unpaid, unglamorous, and worth more than the other three combined.
India now has roughly 27.39 crore mutual fund folios and an industry AUM of ₹82.64 lakh crore as of September 2026 (AMFI). Monthly SIP contributions crossed ₹32,490 crore in September 2026. Most of that money does not need a clever fund. It needs someone to keep the investor invested.
AMFI registered vs SEBI registered: what to verify before you invest
These are two different licences and they are routinely confused in Thane WhatsApp groups.
- AMFI-registered Mutual Fund Distributor (MFD) — sells and services mutual fund schemes and is compensated by the AMC through a trail commission embedded in the regular plan's expense ratio. You pay nothing separately.
- SEBI-registered Investment Adviser (RIA) — provides advice only, charges a fee directly, and is barred from receiving product commissions. SEBI caps that fee at 2.5% of assets under advice per year, or ₹1,51,000 per family per year in fixed-fee mode.
As of 25 October 2026 there were 1,062 SEBI-registered investment advisers in the entire country, according to SEBI's own registry. That is a small number relative to the investor base, which is why most Indian households are served by distributors rather than fee-only advisers.
Whatever route you choose, verify three things: the ARN or registration number, whether the person is authorised for the product they are recommending, and how exactly they get paid. If someone cannot answer the third question clearly, walk away. We have written a full comparison in fee-only RIA vs mutual fund distributor.
What you actually pay
With a distributor, there is no invoice. The cost sits inside the fund's total expense ratio (TER), and the AMC passes a slice to the distributor as trail commission. Trail rates are disclosed scheme by scheme and typically fall in this range:
| Fund category | Typical trail commission | Who pays it |
|---|---|---|
| Equity and equity-oriented schemes | 0.20% – 1.00% per year | AMC, out of the scheme's TER |
| Debt schemes | 0.10% – 1.00% per year | AMC, out of the scheme's TER |
| Index funds and ETFs | Usually lower than active equity | AMC, out of the scheme's TER |
The number moves with the AMC and the scheme. Since April 2026, AMCs pay the base commission to all distributors and pay the 18% GST separately to GST-registered distributors against a valid tax invoice — so the quoted trail rate is no longer grossed up for GST the way it used to be.
Regular vs direct: the trade-off in numbers
A direct plan of the same scheme is genuinely cheaper. The gap in expense ratio is usually 0.5% to 1.0%. On a ₹10,000 monthly SIP over 20 years at 12% gross returns, a 0.6% versus 1.2% TER produces roughly ₹98.8 lakh versus ₹91.9 lakh — about ₹6.9 lakh, purely from the fee difference.
So why do experienced investors still use regular plans? Because the fee is the smaller variable. The holding period is the bigger one. AMFI–CRISIL data shows 23% of regular-plan SIP investors held their investments for more than five years, against only 12.4% of direct-plan investors. By March 2026, 34.4% of regular-plan AUM was over five years old versus 19.9% in direct plans.
In the compounding formula, corpus = P × (1 + r)n. The expense ratio nudges r by about one percentage point. Behaviour decides n — and a single panic exit in a correction can cost several years of n. That is the entire case for paying a distributor, and it is why we tell clients openly that a genuinely disciplined DIY investor with two or three funds and no urge to tinker is a fine candidate for direct plans. The full arithmetic is in direct vs regular mutual funds.
How we work with clients in Thane
Manas Money is run by CA Manas Madrecha, a Chartered Accountant, AMFI Registered Mutual Fund Distributor and NISM Certified Research Analyst. The firm is backed by the 35-year-old Madrecha Group and manages over ₹110 million in client assets across 24+ cities and 7 countries.
The process is deliberately boring:
- Understand income, expenses, existing holdings, loans, insurance and goals.
- Build a target allocation across equity, debt and other instruments.
- Select funds from the distribution bouquet — mutual funds, SIF, PMS, AIF and corporate FDs.
- Set up SIPs and lumpsums, and complete KYC and mandate formalities.
- Review quarterly, rebalance when drift is material, and course-correct after life events.
Everything is trackable in the Manas Money app. Clients in Thane can meet at our Wagle Estate office; clients in Mumbai, Navi Mumbai and overseas meet on Google Meet. If you are nearby, the Wagle Estate page has directions and parking details.
Who this is for, and who it is not for
This works well for salaried professionals building a first serious corpus, business owners in the Wagle Estate and Ghodbunder Road belt who need treasury and personal money handled together, doctors and consultants with lumpy cash flows, and NRIs who need an India-side point of contact. Our financial planning and portfolio review services cover most of these cases.
It is not for someone who wants to day-trade, wants guaranteed returns, or wants a product recommendation without sharing any financial information. We also do not sell insurance as an investment, and we will say so if a ₹50 lakh term plan is a better use of your money than another SIP.
Why investors in Thane choose Manas Money
Thane is a city of about 18.4 lakh people within 128 sq km, sitting at the northern edge of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, with a large MIDC industrial estate at Wagle Estate. Most of our clients are within a 30-minute drive of the office, which means reviews happen in person rather than over email. That proximity is not a marketing line — it is the difference between a plan that gets followed and a PDF that gets filed.

Frequently asked questions
Is a mutual fund distributor in Thane free for the investor?
Yes, in the sense that you never receive an invoice. The distributor is paid a trail commission by the asset management company, out of the regular plan's expense ratio, typically 0.20%–1.00% a year on equity funds. The cost is real but embedded in the fund, not billed to you separately.
Thane mein mutual fund advisor kitna charge karta hai?
Alag se kuch nahi. AMFI-registered distributor ki fees AMC deta hai trail commission ke roop mein, jo regular plan ke expense ratio ke andar hoti hai — equity funds mein aam taur par 0.20% se 1.00% saalana. Aapko koi separate bill nahi milta.
What is the difference between an ARN and a SEBI RIA number?
ARN-330576 is Manas Money's AMFI registration as a mutual fund distributor, which permits distribution and servicing of mutual fund schemes against an AMC-paid commission. A SEBI RIA registration (an INA number) permits fee-only investment advice and prohibits product commissions. They are different licences with different revenue models.
Can you help if my existing portfolio is with another distributor?
Yes. We review the existing portfolio first — overlap, expense ratios, risk mismatch and goal alignment — before recommending any change. Switching existing units can trigger capital gains tax, so we model the tax cost before suggesting a move.
Do you serve clients outside Thane?
Yes. We serve clients across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region and in 24+ cities across 7 countries, mostly over Google Meet with the same review cadence. The office in Wagle Estate, Thane West is the physical base.
