A SIP is a habit, not a strategy
India has about 10.89 crore outstanding SIP accounts and monthly SIP contributions reached ₹32,490 crore in September 2026, with SIP assets at ₹17.86 lakh crore (AMFI). Equity schemes have now logged positive net inflows for 61 consecutive months.
That is a genuine structural change in how Indian households invest. But a SIP by itself only solves one problem: it removes the timing decision from the investor's hands. It does not tell you whether ₹25,000 a month is the right number, whether a small-cap fund belongs in a three-year goal, or what to do when the portfolio is down 22% and the SIP has just auto-debited.
Those three questions are the actual work. Everything else is a bank mandate.
How much should you SIP each month?
The number should come from the goal, not from what feels affordable. The sequence we use is:
- Define the goal — amount needed, in today's rupees, and the date.
- Inflate it — a ₹50 lakh education goal in 12 years at 6% education inflation is roughly ₹1 crore, not ₹50 lakh.
- Assume a realistic return for the asset mix, not the best five-year record of any one fund.
- Back-calculate the monthly amount using the SIP calculator.
- Compare the total against your actual surplus — and if it does not fit, change the goal's date or scope, not the return assumption.
Step 5 is where most plans fail. Stretching the return assumption to make an unaffordable goal look affordable is the most common error we correct in first meetings.
Then add a step-up
A flat SIP assumes your income never rises. A 10% annual step-up — increasing the SIP amount every year in line with income — typically cuts the required investment period by several years for the same target. It is the single highest-leverage change most investors can make, and it takes one instruction to the AMC.
SIP or lump sum?
Mathematically, a lump sum invested early usually beats a SIP when markets rise over the period, because more money is exposed for longer. Behaviourally, a SIP wins far more often, because investors do not actually have the full lump sum sitting in cash, and those who do tend to wait for a "better entry" that never arrives.
In practice we use both. A bonus, an inheritance or a maturing FD is deployed as a lump sum in tranches over a defined window (often 3–6 months) rather than all at once, which is a compromise that gets implemented rather than argued about. Recurring salary surplus goes into a SIP.
The four SIP mistakes we see most in Thane
1. Too many funds
A portfolio of 14 funds across 6 AMCs is not diversification — it is an index fund with extra steps and a higher average expense ratio. Overlap is the issue: three large-cap funds and two flexi-caps often hold 60–70% of the same stocks. We usually consolidate to 4–6 funds across categories when we do a portfolio review.
2. No step-up, ever
A ₹10,000 SIP started in 2018 and never revised is, in real terms, a shrinking SIP. Income rises, goals get larger, and the contribution stays fixed.
3. Stopping in a correction
This is the expensive one. A SIP that is stopped during a drawdown converts a temporary mark-to-market loss into a permanent one, and gives up the low-NAV purchases that make the recovery work. DALBAR's 2026 study found the US equity investor gap swinging from 848 basis points in 2024 to 72 basis points in 2025 — the behaviour, not the market, drove the difference.
4. Wrong category for the horizon
A small-cap or sectoral fund funding a three-year goal is a mismatch, regardless of the fund's quality. The goal's date determines the maximum drawdown the portfolio can absorb, and therefore the category.
How we set up a SIP
The process at Manas Money, run by CA Manas Madrecha, is:
- Cash-flow review — what genuinely remains each month after fixed commitments.
- Goal sheet — each goal with a date and an inflated amount.
- Allocation per goal — equity/debt split based on horizon, not on market view.
- Fund selection from the distribution bouquet — mutual funds primarily, with SIF for certain mandates.
- Mandate setup, auto-debit, and a written step-up schedule.
- Quarterly review, annual rebalance, and course correction after life events.

What it costs
As an AMFI-registered mutual fund distributor (ARN-330576), we are paid by the asset management company through a trail commission inside the regular plan's expense ratio — typically 0.20%–1.00% a year on equity funds. You receive no separate invoice for SIP setup or reviews.
If you are deciding between a distributor and a fee-only adviser, note that a direct plan plus a SEBI RIA fee often costs more in total than a regular plan, because you pay the direct expense ratio and the adviser's fee. The arithmetic is set out in direct vs regular mutual funds.
SIP date, frequency and the tax that follows
Three operational details that nobody explains and everybody should know:
The date. Pick a date a few days after salary credit, not on the 1st. A SIP that bounces because the salary landed late costs a bank charge and, more importantly, breaks the habit.
The frequency. Monthly is fine. Weekly and daily SIPs produce more transactions without a meaningfully better outcome for a long-term goal, and they make the statement harder to read.
The tax. Every SIP instalment is a separate purchase with its own holding period. A five-year SIP redeemed in year six is a mix of long-term and short-term units, not one long-term block. That is why redeeming a SIP portfolio requires unit-level FIFO accounting, and why the taxation guide matters more for SIP investors than for lumpsum investors.

Frequently asked questions
How much SIP should I start with in Thane?
There is no city-specific number. The SIP should be back-calculated from each goal — the inflated target amount, the date, and a realistic return for the asset mix. A common starting range for a Thane household with a stable surplus is 20–30% of net monthly income, but the goal maths overrides any rule of thumb.
SIP kitna minimum hai?
Technically kuch mutual funds mein ₹100–₹500 se shuru ho jata hai. Practically, SIP ka amount goal se decide hona chahiye, minimum ticket size se nahi. Chhota SIP bhi chalega, lekin goal ki date aur amount dekh kar hi number tay karein.
Should I stop my SIP when the market falls?
No. Stopping during a drawdown converts a temporary loss into a permanent one and gives up the low-NAV purchases that drive the recovery. If the goal is still valid, the SIP should continue. If the goal itself changed, that is a different decision.
Is a step-up SIP worth it?
Yes. A 10% annual step-up typically shortens the time needed to reach a fixed target by several years, because contributions grow with income instead of staying flat in nominal terms.
Do you charge for SIP setup or reviews?
No separate charge. As an AMFI-registered mutual fund distributor we are compensated through the trail commission paid by the AMC inside the regular plan expense ratio, typically 0.20%–1.00% a year on equity funds.
